This year’s Dengeki Bunko event shattered Sword Art Online fans’ uncertainty regarding the continuation of their favorite anime. A new series, or season three, based on the light novel was announced at the Tokyo event. The new episodes will be an adaptation of the Alicization Arc chapters. As usual, the details are scarce at this point. What we do know is that the anime will see the return of voice actors Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna. The new characters Alice and Eugeo will be voiced by Ai Kayano and Nobunaga Shimazaki. Ai Kayano borrowed her voice to many well-known anime and video games characters such as Y’shtola from Final Fantasy XIV and Nagi Aiza from Your Lie in April. Nobunaga Shimazaki began his voice acting career in 2009 and, since then, he voiced more than 60 anime characters. He is the voice of Yuno from Black Cover, the new shounen anime set to premiere this fall. Sword Art Online Alicization teaser shows bits of the story and introduces the new characters.
It will be interesting to see how the anime adapts the light novel and what changes will it bring. Sword Art Online Alicization Arc covers Volumes 9 to 20 from the novel. The events are set to begin in August 2026. Kikouka Seijirou recruited Kirito to work for Rath, a private company with ties to the government. Kirito’s job is to test the Soul Translator. This new Full Dive device is built with modern technology and connects to the users’ soul instead of their brain like the previous dive machines. Kirito is left in the dark about the real purpose of his job. After an encounter with an old enemy, he slips into a coma. The Soul Translator might be his only hope so he is once again connected to the device and plunges into the virtual realm known as the Underworld. Here he meets Alice and Eugeo, two of the main characters of Sword Art Online Alicization. No news or hints about a release date but most likely the new series will premiere sometimes in 2018.
